About the Capped Bust Dime
The Capped Bust Dime is a classic American coin minted from 1809 until 1837. It was designed by Robert Scot, the first chief engraver of the United States Mint, and features Lady Liberty in a Phrygian cap on one side and a heraldic eagle on the other. It is a smaller silver coin compared to other coins of the time and has since become a favorite among coin collectors.
The coin is made of 89.24% silver and 10.76% copper, giving it a total weight of 2.70 grams with a diameter of 18.8 millimeters. The edge of the coin is reeded with 13 shallow vertical grooves to help prevent counterfeiting.
The obverse of the coin features a bust of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, with the word "Liberty" above her head. The liberty cap was a symbol of freedom during the American Revolution and is believed to represent the members of the newly formed United States of America. The reverse of the coin features a heraldic eagle with its wings outstretched, holding an olive branch and bundle of arrows in its talons, representing peace and war.
