The Capped Bust Dime is a classic American coin minted from 1809 until 1837. It was designed by Robert Scot, the first chief engraver of the United States Mint, and features Lady Liberty in a Phrygian cap on one side and a heraldic eagle on the other. It is a smaller silver coin compared to other coins of the time and has since become a favorite among coin collectors.
The coin is made of 89.24% silver and 10.76% copper, giving it a total weight of 2.70 grams with a diameter of 18.8 millimeters. The edge of the coin is reeded with 13 shallow vertical grooves to help prevent counterfeiting.
The obverse of the coin features a bust of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, with the word "Liberty" above her head. The liberty cap was a symbol of freedom during the American Revolution and is believed to represent the members of the newly formed United States of America. The date is seen below her bust in Roman numerals.
The reverse of the coin features a heraldic eagle with its wings outstretched, holding an olive branch and bundle of arrows in its talons, representing peace and war. There is a wreath of laurel leaves behind the eagle, symbolizing victory. Above the eagle is the inscription "United States of America" and below it is the denomination, "One Dime."
The Capped Bust Dime is a highly sought-after coin by collectors due to its detailed designs and rarity. The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) lists several varieties of the Capped Bust Dime, including the 1833 no stars, the 1834 13 stars, and the 1837 large letters. The highest graded coin is an 1807 overton-105 which grades a perfect MS-67 and is worth over $200,000.
