About the Morgan Dollar

The Morgan Dollar is a famous American silver dollar coin minted from 1878 to 1904 and briefly again in 1921. It was named for one of its designers, United States Mint engraver George T. Morgan. The silver for the coins was taken from western mines, specifically the Comstock Lode in Nevada, the largest silver-producing mine in American history. The coins were produced in both Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Morgan Dollars are recognizable by the infamous profile of Lady Liberty facing left on their obverses. She is wearing a Phrygian cap with a Liberty pole on one side and an eagle on the other. Around her are the words “United States of America,” with the date at the bottom. The reverse sides have an eagle with wings spread, surrounded by the words “In God We Trust” and the words “One Dollar” with the mintmark underneath.

In minting Morgan Dollars, the government technically overpaid the mining companied for their silver, costing the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. While the coins were never used as legal tender, their sheer beauty and historical appeal still makes them highly valued among collectors. With more than 600 million Morgan Dollars minted, and many still being discovered, the coins remain among the most plentiful of American silver coins.

The coins come in two common varieties, the 1878 8-TF and the 1878 7-TF. The "TF" stands for tail feathers, referring to the number of feathers in the eagle's tail on the reverse side of the coin. On the 1878 7-TF, there is a faint 7-pointed star between the wings, while the 1878 8-TF does not have a star showing. Other varieties of the Morgan Dollar are far more rare and can easily sell for thousand and even tens of thousands of dollars.

The Morgan Dollar is a fascinating part of American history and a great addition to any collection. With its iconic Lady Liberty design and ample availability, it’s no wonder these coins are so beloved by coin enthusiasts. There's nothing quite like the grandeur of a Morgan Dollar to bring one back to America's Wild West past.
