About the Seated Liberty Dollar

The Seated Liberty Dollar, sometimes referred to as the Gobrecht Dollar, was a one dollar silver coin minted from 1840 to 1873. It was designed by Christian Gobrecht and became the first silver variety of the Liberty Head type. The coin was struck in denominations of half dollars, quarters, dimes, and half dimes and was made of 90% silver, 10% copper. The obverse of the coin featured Lady Liberty seated with a Liberty pole on one side and a shield on the other. The reverse had an eagle with wings spread, holding an olive branch and arrows in its claws.

The Seated Liberty Dollar was a highly sought after coin as a collectible when it was issued. It was also popular in day-to-day commerce, as the Seated Liberty Dollar held a high silver bullion value and could be exchanged for goods and services. Over the course of production, several changes and variations were introduced, including modifications to the design. In 1865, the addition of the motto “In God We Trust” was added, along with the design of the shield on the obverse side.
