About the Seated Liberty Dollar
The Seated Liberty Dollar, sometimes referred to as the Gobrecht Dollar, was a one dollar silver coin minted from 1840 to 1873. It was designed by Christian Gobrecht and became the first silver variety of the Liberty Head type. The coin was struck in denominations of half dollars, quarters, dimes, and half dimes and was made of 90% silver, 10% copper. The obverse of the coin featured Lady Liberty seated with a Liberty pole on one side and a shield on the other.
