About the U.S. Territories Quarters

In 2009, the United States Mint released a series of quarters honoring the five United States Territories: the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. These coins were the second of six issues in the United States Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.

The Puerto Rico quarter features the La Fortaleza, the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico, in San Juan. The Guam quarter features a proa, a traditional outrigger canoe, and a palm tree. The American Samoa quarter features a scene of the marine life of the coral reef, and a Samoan flying fox, the territory’s official bird. The United States Virgin Islands quarter features a crop of sugar cane, the islands’ primary crop, and a native yellow breasted tropical mockingbird. The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands quarter features a Carolinian Latte Stone, a traditional pillar used in architecture, and an island tree lizard.

The obverse or heads side of each of the United States Territory Quarters features a large portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, as designed by John Flanagan. This design was first featured on the 1932 Washington Quarter and has been in circulation ever since.

All five of the 2009 United States Territories Quarters are made from a composition of 8.33% nickel and the balance copper and are minted with a reeded edge. Each coin has a diameter of 24.26 mm and a weight of 5.67 grams. The coins were minted at the United States Mint facilities in Philadelphia and Denver and have a mint mark of either ‘P’ or ‘D’, except for special proof and uncirculated coins.

The United States Territories Quarters of 2009 are a wonderful way to commemorate the unique histories and cultures of these five beautiful and diverse territories. These coins make an excellent addition to any collection and will be treasured for years to come.
