The Liberty Head had a long run, having been designed by Christian Gobrecht and first issued in 1838. The design was modified slightly in 1839, and then again in 1840 when the denomination was moved to the edge. The Liberty Head was the first $10 gold coin to be issued in any country, and the design fit in perfectly with the ideals of the newly minted United States.
The obverse of the Liberty Head $10 gold coin features the portrait of Lady Liberty encircled by 13 stars. The reverse of the coin displays a majestic bald eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, in addition to the denomination of the coin: "Ten D". The reverse also includes the year of mintage and the national motto "E Pluribus Unum".
