About the Sacagawea Dollar

The Sacagawea Dollar coin, first minted in 2000, is a United States one-dollar coin featuring the Shoshone Indian princess and guide, Sacagawea. The coin also features an eagle in flight on the reverse side. It was the first circulating United States coin to feature a Native American as the main feature.

The coin is an excellent representation of Sacagawea's important role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition. She provided invaluable assistance by acting as a guide and leading the group to watering holes, crucial food sources and other important landmarks.

One of the most noticeable differences between the Sacagawea Dollar coin and other United States dollar coins is Sacagawea's image and the eagle image on the reverse side. The Sacagawea Dollar coin also differs from other dollar coins by having a golden hue.

The coin has 13 stars on the reverse side to commemorate the original 13 colonies. The size and diameter are about the same as U.S. quarters and the weight of the coin is 8.1 grams. There were more than 500 million Sacagawea Dollar coins minted in the first year, with subsequent mintages in the following years.

The long-term success of the Sacagawea Dollar coin is uncertain, despite its congressionally-mandated mintage. It is accepted by the U.S. Mint as legal tender, has been used in limited circulation in some parts of the country, and accepted in some United States federal government transactions. Whether or not it will become widely circulated or accepted by merchants nationwide is yet to be seen.

The Sacagawea Dollar coin is a reminder of the valuable role Native Americans played in the United States' past, and will continue to serve as both a tribute to Sacagawea, and an enduring symbol of American history and diversity.

The 2002-S Proof Sacagawea Dollar coin, has a total mintage of 3,211,995, struck at the San Francisco, California mint, and engraved by Glenna Goodacre. Made of manganese-brass clad copper (cladding: 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel; core: 100% copper), weighing 8.1 grams, with a diameter of 26.5 mm, and a thickness of 2 mm, and featuring a smooth edge.

The obverse is sacagawea (1788-1812), a shoshone native american and a translator and guide to the lewis and clark expedition, with her son jean baptiste charbonneau and the date to the right. It reads “LIBERTY IN GOD WE TRUST 2000 P GG”. The reverse is eagle in flight with the denomination below. It reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA E PLURIBUS UNUM TDR ONE DOLLAR”.
