The Ike Dollar is a United States coin minted between 1971 and 1978 and is named after former US President Dwight Eisenhower. The inspiration for the coin's design was the memorial to Eisenhower in Washington, DC. The obverse design of the coin features a portrait of Eisenhower facing toward the right and is inscribed "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and the year of minting. The reverse of the coin features an eagle with a shield, with a stylized olive branch and three arrows in the talons, and the words "United States of America" and "E Pluribus Unum." The value of the coin is one dollar.
The Ike Dollar was minted in both a proof and a circulating version. The proof version has a frosted image and a higher value than the circulating version. Collectors of coins can purchase individual coins or sets of these coins. Sets contain both the proof and circulating version of the coins. The coins come in a variety of metals and finishes, including copper-nickel clad, silver alloy, and copper-nickel clad proof. These coins are highly sought-after by collectors and their value has increased significantly over the years.
The Ike Dollar was the first coin to depict an American president on the obverse side since the Half Dollar featuring President John F. Kennedy was discontinued in 1964. These coins are now highly valuable to collectors, with some coins selling for hundreds of dollars.
