About the Barber Dime

The Barber Dime was a ten-cent coin issued by the United States Mint from 1892 to 1916. It was designed by Charles Barber, Chief Engraver at the Mint from 1880 to 1917. The obverse of the Barber Dime features Lady Liberty, the god of the ancient Greco-Roman culture, facing the left wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with a beautiful headband and a ribbon that reads LIBERTY. The reverse has a designer’s initial ‘B’, the denomination ‘ONE DIME’, and a wreath of corn, cotton and other agricultural crops.

The Barber Dime was minted in a number of denominations including regular, silver proofs, and gold proofs. The most common of these denominations is known as the ‘Philadelphia’ and it has no mint mark. Other types of Barber Dimes include those minted in New Orleans, Denver and San Francisco, all bearing distinctive mint marks. All Barber Dimes produced are considered rare and highly sought after.
