About the Draped Bust Cent

The Draped Bust Cent is a popular and iconic United States coin that was issued from 1796 to 1807. It was one of the first coins issued by the United States government and, as such, is highly sought after by collectors. The obverse of the Draped Bust Cent features a portrait of Liberty looking to the right, with her hair in a bun and held in place with a band. She is wearing a draped bustline, a long and loose dress. The words "LIBERTY" and "1790," the year the coins were first issued, are written along the border. The reverse side of the Draped Bust Cent shows a wreath of laurel leaves, which was a symbol of victory, surrounding the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." A small Shield is featured under the wreath, which represented the protection the United States government offered its citizens. The denomination of the coin (1¢) is written at the bottom of the reverse. The coins were designed by noted British engraver and medallist Robert Scot. They were minted using mainly copper, with some variant versions made using a silver alloy. These coins were also produced in several varieties due to the extensive use of old and worn dies.

The Draped Bust Cent is an important part of United States history and is highly sought after by both coin hobbyists and serious numismatists. It has been used as a symbol of the independence of the United States from Great Britain and holds a place in the hearts of many collectors. With their historical significance and unique designs, the Draped Bust Cents are an important part of any numismatic collection.
