About the Other Bullion
Since 2009, the United States has been issuing various bullion coins for sale. Bullion coins are coins explicitly issued for the purpose of investment. Being made of precious metal like gold and silver, these coins are considered a form of currency and a store of value.
One of the more popular bullion coins is the American Gold Eagle, released in 2009 to replace the American Gold Buffalo coin. The American Gold Eagle features the iconic Lady Liberty on the front and a bald eagle on the back, symbolizing national pride. The obverse (heads) design is based on Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ classic 1907 Double Eagle gold coin. The reverse (tail) design is a modernized version of the classic American bald eagle.
The American Silver Eagle was also released in 2009 and is made of 1 full troy ounce (31.101 grams) of 99.9% fine silver, making it the only official silver bullion coin of the United States. The obverse side bears the design of Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty and the reverse side includes a heraldic eagle with thirteen five-pointed stars.
The American Platinum Eagle was released in 2018 and is the only official platinum bullion coin of the United States. It is made of 1 full troy ounce (31.101 grams) of 99.95% fine platinum, and has a face value of $100. The obverse portrays a full facing view of the Statue of Liberty with the inscriptions “Liberty” and “In God We Trust”. The reverse design depicts a soaring eagle with a face value and the inscriptions “United States of America”, and “E Pluribus Unum”.
