About the First Spouse

The United States Mint has been producing First Spouse bullion coins since 2007 in their popular American Gold Eagle series. These coins feature the spouse of the President of the United States and the designs represent different periods of American history. The obverse of the coins feature a portrait of the First Spouse, while the reverse of the coins depict an image symbolic of the life or interests of the individual.

The series started with the release of the 2007-W First Spouse half-ounce gold bullion coins featuring Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty, and Dolley Madison. The series continued in 2008 with half-ounce gold coins depicting Elizabeth Monroe and Louisa Adams. In 2009, the series was expanded to include a quarter-ounce gold option in addition to the half-ounce coins, and the first quarter-ounce coins were issued featuring Andrew Jackson’s Liberty, and Rachel Jackson.

In 2010, the series continued with the release of coins featuring Letitia Tyler, that of Julia Tyler, and that of Sarah Polk. In 2011, coins depicting Margaret Taylor, and that of James K. Polk were issued. 2012 saw the release of coins featuring Abigail Fillmore and Jane Pierce. The 2013 coins featured coins of Edith Wilson and Harriet Lane Johnson. The 2014 issuance saw coins featuring Lucretia Garfield and Tennessee Claflin. The 2015 coins featured Frances Cleveland and Caroline Harrison and the 2016 coins featuring Alice Paul and Frances Cleveland (Younger Portrait). The most recent coins in the series include those of Ellen Arthur, Lucy Hayes, Julia Grant, Lucy Ware Webb Hayes, and Lou Hoover.

These coins are struck from the same precious metal used in the American Gold Eagle series-- .9167 fine gold and are minted at the West Point Mint in the United States. The coins come in an uncirculated finish and feature a “W” mint mark, signifying that they were struck at West Point.

The First Spouse bullion coins are an ideal addition to any precious metals portfolio. They are an attractive way to diversify a collection and their beauty and timelessness make them a unique and sought after way to add value to an investment portfolio. The coins are minted in limited quantities, so the value of the coins is likely to increase over time.
