About the $100 Platinum Eagles

The $100 Platinum Eagles bullion coins are a series of coins issued by the United States Mint beginning in 1997. These bullion coins are made from .9995 platinum and are .9995 fine, with a face value of $100. They were the first U.S. bullion coins struck in platinum and feature the classic obverse and reverse designs of the Statue of Liberty and an American bald eagle.

The obverse of these coins feature a depiction of Liberty taken from the 1921 $20 Saint-Gaudens double-eagle coin. The reverse of this coin is an adaptation of John Mercanti’s 1986 heraldic eagle pattern.

These coins were initially offered in proof editions as well as bullion versions. The proof barrels were issued in two different versions: the platinum eagle and the gold eagle. The platinum eagle was issued in five separate issues over the years, with face values of $10, $25, $50, $100 and $200, respectively. The gold eagle was issued in four different versions with face values of $5, $10, $25 and $50, respectively.

The mintage for the proof Platinum Eagles was limited to a maximum of 30,000 coins per year, with the number of coins minted varying from year to year. The mintage for the bullion version of the Platinum Eagle is unlimited.

In 1997, the Platinum Eagle was the first coin to be issued in the American Platinum Eagle Series, with the mintage being limited to 30,000. From 1998 onward, the mintage was reduced to 30,000 coins each year, though the years 1999 and 2001 actually had less coins minted with only 12,000 and 24,000, respectively. In 2006, the mintage was further reduced to only 10,000 coins.

The total mintage of the $100 Platinum Eagles bullion coins through 2020 is just over 800,000 coins. The most widely available dates are 1997 and 1998, with the 1999 and 2006 coins being the rarest dates. These coins are highly sought after by coin collectors, as they are a beautiful way to commemorate the American Platinum Eagle Series.
