About the $10 Gold Eagles

In 1986, the US Mint released the first American Gold Eagle coin, paving the way for a staple of bullion coin collecting. The Gold Eagles come in 1/10 oz size, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz sizes, with a $5 face value printed on each coin. The coin designs vary slightly, with four versions released in each year: The obverse featuring a full-length figure of Liberty, the reverse featuring an eagle, initially designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. The obverse of the coin features the year of mintage, weight, and face value of the coin, but the design remains mostly unchanged throughout the years.

The gold content of the bullion coins varies according to their size and type. The formula used by the US Mint for calculating the gold content of the coin is a bit more complicated than just calculating the face value of the coin multiplied by the gold price at the time of minting as it takes into account the alloying metals included in the minting process. The $10 American Gold Eagles from 1986 to 2021, for example, contain .48375 of an ounce of gold each.

The coins contain 99.9% gold in both the bullion and numismatic varieties, with the numismatic coins earning a special grade based on their condition. They are considered a highly collectible coin with their stunning designs and gold content. The coins are highly sought-after by both collectors and investors.

The coins carry a legal tender status, meaning they can be used in transactions, but their value is based upon the gold content rather than their face value. According to PCGS, the numismatic value of a highly graded $10 Gold Eagle can be 7 times that of the melt value of the coin, making them a treasured commodity for numismatists, investors, and collectors.

The US Mint has released the American Gold Eagle coin every year since 1986 and it continues to be one of the most popular bullion coins around the world. Its gold content and stunning design make it a valuable coin for both collectors and investors.
