The American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a series of commemorative coins issued by the United States Mint beginning in 2018, to honor innovative achievements and individuals throughout the history of the United States. These coins, released for a period of 14 years until 2032, are a testimony to the legacy of American invention and innovation, from travel and trade to science, medicine, and communications.
The program consists of four yearly coins featuring designs that represent each of the fifty states of the U.S., plus the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. The reverse side of each coin commemorates a particular innovation, invention, or individual, honoring the achievements and accomplishments of all Americans. The obverse side of each coin features a restored version of the Statue of Liberty portrait. Along the rim of the coins are the inscriptions "United States of America," "In God We Trust," and "E Pluribus Unum," accompanied by the date of issue and mint mark "P" or "D," indicating where the coin was minted.
Produced with a golden outer ring and a colored core, each coin in the series contains a unique finish of proof and uncirculated coins, determined by its minting process. The coins minted at the highest quality level, the proof coins, will feature a smooth, high-relief portrait, field, and lettering on the obverse, accompanied by a smooth and reflective reverse. The uncirculated version of the coins feature a higher relief strike, but with a slightly muted or frosted, though still lustrous, finish.
Each of the 56 released coins are legal tender and is worth the corresponding $1 denomination. The coins are also produced in extremely limited quantities, making them an especially desirable item for coin collectors.
The American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a fittingly honorable tribute to the countless individual and collective accomplishments of a nation whose influence and ingenuity have touched and influenced countless lives throughout the world.
