The Capped Bust Half Dime is a piece of American currency minted in the early 1800s and remains a popular coin among collectors today. The coin was designed by Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Reich and was first minted between 1829 and 1837. The coin features a design of Lady Liberty wearing a turban surrounded by the legend “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” on one side, and a curved shield on the obverse with a denomination of “5 C”. There are two types of the Capped Bust Half Dime, the earlier type from 1829 to 1837 with a ‘Free struck’ style, and the later type from 1837 to 1873 which is more common and was struck using a collar. The differences between the two are relatively minor but enough to make them collectible.
The Capped Bust Half Dime is part of the larger denomination of coins referred to as “dimes”. This denomination is currently still in circulation today, but its predecessor, the Capped Bust Half Dime, is now only collected or traded as a collector’s item. These coins are much rarer and, therefore, more valuable than their modern counterparts. The grades of the coins can vary greatly, depending on their condition. In the industry, they are typically referred to as “circulated”, “XF”, and “uncirculated” coins.
The circulated condition coins are the most common, generally having a few letters from the design being slightly worn or having slight flaws and discolorations. On the other hand, XF and uncirculated coins are in extremely fine, almost perfect, condition and are much more valuable and sought after by collectors. The Capped Bust Half Dime is a rare and collectible coin, due to its historic significance. It can make a great addition to any collection and is sure to be a conversation piece.
