About the Washington Quarter

details

The Washington Quarter, first introduced in 1932 to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the birth of George Washington, is one of the most popular coins in circulation today. The Washington Quarter is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful coins in the world. It features the profile of George Washington on the obverse (front) and a bald eagle holding an olive branch and arrows on the reverse (back). The design was created by John Flanagan and served as the standard design for all Washington Quarters until 1999 when it was replaced with the 50 States Quarter series.

The original 1932 Washington Quarter was minted in two varieties: the Philadelphia issue and the Denver issue. Both coins are made from an alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper, with the Philadelphia issue featuring a mintmark of "P" and the Denver issue featuring a mintmark of "D".

Between 1932 and 1999, there have been several special commemorative releases of the Washington Quarter. Some of these include the 1975-76 Bicentennial Quarter, the 1976-S Quarter with a Special Reverse, the 1982-S Washington Quarter with a new obverse design, and the 1991-S Washington Quarter with a Cheerios reverse.

Collectors of Washington Quarters have many grading tiers to choose from, ranging from Good (G), Very Good (VG), Fine, Very Fine (VF), Extremely Fine (EF), and Uncirculated, to Proof, Deep Mirror Proof, and Special and Offer Strike varieties.

If you’re looking to add the Washington Quarter to your collection, there are several certified grading services to choose from. Top grading services for coins include the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).

In conclusion, the Washington Quarter is a lasting symbol of the birth of our nation and is beloved by both coin collectors and non-collectors alike. With so many variations and commemorative editions, it is sure to be a great addition to any collection.
