About the Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a beautiful, beloved coin that was first minted in 1916 and was produced until 1947. This coin was released with the intention of replacing the Barber Half Dollar and was designed by Adolph A. Weinman.

The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty walking in a wrap of the American Flag, with her right arm reaching out and her left arm carrying branches of laurel and oak. This iconic design embodies the concept of freedom and the greatness of the United States. The reverse of the coin consists of an eagle in flight, with a "star filled sky" behind it, as well as its wings forming a shield. Along with these features, the classic American motto "In God We Trust" is printed on the top half.

In total, Walking Liberty Half Dollars have been minted in three different designs. The first design, which features a "Full Head" of Lady Liberty, was minted from 1916-1917. This design was changed in 1917 to the now classic version of Liberty. From 1918-1924 and from 1925-1947 the classic design was used. The final design, which features a "Reduced Head" of Lady Liberty, was minted only between the years 1924-1925.

Walking Liberty Half Dollars are made from 90% silver, 5% copper, and 5% other alloys, and were originally minted at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints during the years 1916-1917. Later, the coins were exclusively minted at the Philadelphia Mint from 1918-1947.

Today, Walking Liberty Half Dollars can be found in a variety of conditions, with some coins in mint condition and many more coins with various levels of wear and tear. These coins are sought after by coin collectors and are often graded in order to determine their condition and value. The condition of a coin is often a key factor in determining its value.

Overall, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a great representation of American freedom, and a classic and beloved coin among coin collectors and investors alike.
