About the Flowing Hair Half Dollar

The Flowing Hair Half Dollar Coin is a Silver Dollar coin from 1794 to 1795. It was the first Silver Dollar minted for the newly formed United States of America and it represented a symbol of hope and confidence in the young nation.

Created under the direction of Thomas Jefferson and designed by Robert Scot, the Flowing Hair Half Dollar featured a portrait of Lady Liberty, who held a pole topped with a Liberty cap with the word ‘Liberty’ engraved on the cap. On the reverse, the coin depicted an Eagle with an olive branch in one talon, and a bundle of arrows in the other.

These coins were minted in three varieties; the Large Eagle reverse, the Heraldic Eagle reverse, and the Knobbed reverse. The Large Eagle and the Knobbed reversed coins both had mintage numbers of over 59,000, while the Heraldic Eagle reverse had a mintage of only 1,758 coins.

The Flowing Hair Half Dollar coins have become a collector’s item over time, with many pieces of potential historical interest. The rare Heraldic Eagle reversed coins are particularly valuable, and highly sought after. Some coins are also estimated to be worth more than $10,000.

Overall, the Flowing Hair Half Dollar is an iconic coin with a great deal of historical significance and value. It is an important part of early American coinage and an excellent addition to any collection.
