The Barber Half Dollar is an iconic 19th century coin, first introduced in 1892. It was designed by Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber, who also designed the Barber Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar. The design features Lady Liberty in the form of a visiting figure, with her hair cascade down her back and face with a Phrygian cap on her head. This was designed after Greek coinage, and it was meant to signify independence and freedom.
The coin was minted in ninety percent silver and was produced at the United States Mints in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans until the coin ceased in 1915. It can also be noted that the Barber Half Dollar is very rare and valuable.
The Barber Half Dollar is popular amongst coin collectors for its iconic look and relatability to the Greek coinage. The obverse is bust of liberty right, motto above, 13 stars around. It reads “IN GOD WE TRUST B 1904”. The reverse is heraldic eagle with 13 stars above and the denomination below, with the country name surrounding the rim. It reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA E PLURIBUS UNUM S HALF DOLLAR”.
