About the St. Gaudens $20

The St. Gaudens $20 gold coin is a historically significant and extremely sought after piece of U.S. currency. First minted in 1907, and designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, it was created to be the most beautiful U.S. coin ever made. Not only was it widely accepted by merchants as a valid form of currency, but it also became a widely collected artwork.

The front of the $20 St. Gaudens gold coin (or obverse) features a full figure of Lady Liberty facing the sun with a strong and determined expression. She carries a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left with her back draped in a flag. The sun's rays are seen radiating out from the scene. Behind Lady Liberty stands a US Capitol building with 46 stars circling it. Inscriptions from the government authenticating the gold coin include "Liberty," "In God We Trust," the year of mintage and the motto "E Pluribus Unum".

The reverse of the coin features a majestic eagle soaring with its wings spread wide. It holds an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left. The sun is seen in the top right corner, with a banner of the mottos: "United States Of America" and "Twenty Dollars" above the eagle's head. The coin was minted from 1907-1933 and is available in two distinct varieties: the high relief and the low relief.

It is well preserved, often in mint condition or with minimal wear, and is made of pure gold containing 0.9675 ounces of gold. It also contains a face value of $20, making it one of the first modern coins to contain a face value.
