The Capped Head $2.5 gold coin minted from 1808 through 1834 is an important part of American numismatic history. This highly sought-after coin features a majestic reverse design of a Heraldic Eagle, along with a left-facing, capped bust of Liberty on the obverse.
Once commonly referred to as a ‘Quarter Eagle,’ this denomination is now referred to as the ‘Capped Head’ series. The coin varies in appearance slightly from the time of its production. In the first year of its mintage, 1808, the reverse features an eagle without arrows. From 1813 to 1834, the Reverse Eagle appears with arrows and an olive branch in its talons.
One of the attractive features of this coin is its gold content. It was minted with a 0.12094 ounces of gold with a diameter of 18.25 mm. This places it among the smaller classic US gold coins and therefore, it is sometimes called an ‘Eighth Eagle’.
The Capped Head coin is popular among both collectors and dealers. The coins are known to be in high demand and the prices reflect that. At the Professional Coin Grading Service, coins in Fine condition can sell for close to $2,000 and coins in Mint State (MS) condition can command prices over $20,000.
