About the Peace Dollar
The Peace Dollar was the first coin struck to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Versailles that put an end to World War I. The coins were authorized by the Pittman Act of April 1923, which coincided with the anniversary of the signing of the treaty. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the Peace Dollar was minted from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935.
The obverse of the Peace Dollar features a portrait of Liberty wearing a sheath crowned with a ribbon inscribed “Peace.” The reverse has a perched eagle with an olive branch in its talons, surrounded by a laurel wreath intended to symbolize peace in the aftermath of World War I.
The Peace Dollar was initially struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, with a diameter of 38.1 millimeters, a weight of 26.73 grams, and a reeded edge. The first coin struck in 1921 featured a high relief design, which was substantially reduced in 1922. The 1934 and 1935 coins were made with a deeper relief.
Many numismatists consider the Peace Dollar to be one of the most attractive coins ever struck in the United States, as well as one of the most sought-after for both collectors and investors. The Mint also released a specially-minted set in 1921 with a prooflike finish (also known as a Satin finish). This set became known as the "Peace Dollar Special Mint Set" or "Satin Proof" and most coins in the set have since been certified as Proof 68 by PCGS. These are considered the most desirable and valuable Peace Dollars by collectors.
