About the Flowing Hair Dollar

The Flowing Hair Dollar coin is one of the oldest and rarest coins in American history, representing the first dollar coin ever struck by the U.S. Mint. This first version of the silver dollar coin was struck in 1794, a period of major financial upheaval for the fledgling United States. The world had just experienced a financial crash, and the U.S. government was looking for a new form of currency.

The Flowing Hair Dollar was created to fill the void, becoming the first standardized form of U.S. currency. As the name implies, the coin featured a design of a woman with flowing hair on the obverse side. On the reverse side is an eagle, with two arrows crossed in its talons, symbolizing America’s commitment to peace and security. Despite the fact that the United States was in a state of strife and instability, the Flowing Hair Dollar successfully bolstered the nation’s currency. At first, the coins were well received by the general public, but their popularity soon dwindled as many people found their size to be too large and unwieldy. They were eventually pulled from circulation in 1795, making them extremely rare. As of today, only 1,758 of these coins are known to exist, making Flowing Hair Dollars highly sought after by coin collectors.

The value of the Flowing Hair Dollar is estimated to range from $25,000 to 400,000, depending on its condition and rarity. Because these coins are so rare, they are often sold at auctions and specialty coin shops. The PCGS CoinFacts website is a great resource for learning more about the scarcity and value of the Flowing Hair Dollar.

Rare coin collectors love the Flowing Hair Dollar due to its historical significance, its rarity, and its aesthetic value. The Flowing Hair Dollar is officially recognized as the first U.S. silver dollar and has a place of honor in U.S. monetary history. Its beautiful design is a reminder of the ingenuity of early American coin makers, making it a desirable piece for any collection.
