The Seated Liberty Dime was first minted in the United States in 1837 and is still an extremely popular coin among collectors today. It was designed by United States Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht and was the first dime introduced that featured the Seated Liberty motif. This design features a portrait of the goddess Liberty sitting on a rock, draped in a flowing robe, with her left hand holding a staff topped by a liberty cap and her right hand grasping a Union shield. In addition to the Liberty figure, the obverse of Seated Liberty Dimes also includes the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” surrounded by thirteen stars.
The reverse of the Seated Liberty Dime displays an agricultural wreath made up of corn, wheat, and cotton, which was meant to represent the importance of agriculture in America. This wreath is surrounded by the inscriptions “ONE DIME”, “1837”, and “10 C.” The 1837 version of the Seated Liberty Dime is the most collectible of the bunch due to it being the first year of issue.
The Seated Liberty Dime was minted from 1837 to 1891 and several different varieties were produced during this time. These varieties include the No Motto, With Motto, With Stars Obverse, Without Stars Obverse, and Proof issues. Each variety has its own unique characteristics and they are all highly sought after by collectors.
Throughout its fifty-four year run, the Seated Liberty Dime was struck in the Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco Mints. Today, Seated Liberty Dimes are much sought after by both investors and collectors. According to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), the most collectible versions of the coin are those that are in superior condition and were struck at the San Francisco Mint.

The 1885 Seated Liberty Dime coin, has a total mintage of 2,532,497, struck at the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania mint, and engraved by Christian Gobrecht. Made of silver (.900) (.100 copper), weighing 2.5 grams, with a diameter of 17.9 mm, and a thickness of 1.05 mm, and featuring a reeded edge.
The obverse is seated liberty looking right above her shoulder, with a cap on a stick and a shield, the country name divided on both sides. It reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1877”. The reverse is the denomination surrounded by a wreath. It reads “ONE DIME”.
