About the Mercury Dime

The Mercury Dime, formally known as the Winged Liberty Head Dime, is one of America’s most iconic coins. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, the Winged Liberty Head Dime is famous for its representation of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with wings, signifying freedom of thought. It also features Weinman’s initials, AW, on the reverse side of the coin and his initials, AW, feature on the lower right of the obverse side. This classic design was produced from 1916-1945 to replace the less popular Barber Dime.The obverse of the Mercury Dime features a portrait of Lady Liberty that is decked out in a Phrygian cap and wings, which is a symbol of liberty. The reverse side of the Mercury Dime features a unique laurel wreath encircling a fasces. A fasces is a symbol of authority, and the laurel wreath symbolizes peace and victory. Mercury Dimes come in two popular forms, the business strikes and the proofs. The business strikes are the coins that were made for circulation, while the proofs were made mainly for collectors. They are made in 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper and have a diameter of 17.9 mm and a weight of 2.5 grams. The rarest Mercury Dime is the 1916-D with a mintage of 264,000. The 1916-S Mercury Dime coin, has a total mintage of 10,450,000, struck at the San Francisco, California mint, and engraved by Adolph Alexander Weinman. Made of silver (.900), weighing 2.5 grams, with a diameter of 17.9 mm, and a thickness of 1 mm, and featuring a reeded (118 reeds) edge.

The obverse is an allegory of liberty wearing a winged phrygian cap (freedom of thought) is surrounded with the word "liberty" and accompanied with the motto: "in god we trust". It reads “LIBERTY IN GOD WE TRUST 1919 AAW”. The reverse is a fasces mixed with an olive branch shows both that the united states is prepared for the war and its desire for peace. it is accompanied with the motto "e • pluribus unum" and surrounded with the face value and the lettering "united • states • of • america", with the mintmark to the right of "one". It reads “E • PLURIBUS UNUM UNITED • STATES • OF • AMERICA * ONE DIME * D”.
