About the $5 Gold Eagles

The American Gold Eagle coins are one of the most recognizable gold pieces in the world. Produced by the United States Mint since 1986, these coins are issued in 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz., and one full ounce denominations. Each Gold Eagle is composed of 91.67 percent pure gold, with the balance of the alloy composed of silver and copper.

The 1986 issue marked the first year of the beautiful $5 gold coin, the smallest denomination of the American Eagle series. The coins are produced in brilliant uncirculated condition and bear a depiction of Lady Liberty on the obverse, with a family of eagles on the reverse. With their limited production and distinctive design, Gold Eagles make popular and reliable investments.

The coins are legal tender with a face value of $5, even though their retail value always rises above face value due to the gold content. Several variants of the Gold Eagle are also offered by the U.S. Mint, including the Proof Gold Eagle and the Numismatic Gold Eagle. Proof coins are struck multiple times for added detail and luster and come sealed in plastic. Numismatic coins are specially graded by third-party companies, such as PCGS or NGC, and carry a premium over the coins’ spot price.

No matter which type of Gold Eagle you choose, they are all a great way to make a smart investment in gold. Gold Eagle coins will never tarnish, making them a secure and attractive means of diversifying your portfolio. As gold prices fluctuate, so too will the value of the Gold Eagle, ensuring a profitable return on investment.

Every $5 Gold Eagle issued since 1986 is sure to make an impressive addition to any coin collection.
