The United States Mint released the $25 American Platinum Eagle bullion coins for the first time in 1997 as an investment-grade piece of precious metal. Since then, these coins have become a valuable and popular choice for investors and collectors alike. Each of these coins is made with .9995 fine platinum and features a weight of 1/10th troy ounces, allowing for fractional ownership of the metal.
The beautiful obverse design of the $25 American Platinum Eagle coins features the iconic statue of Liberty. The reverse design varies each year, but always includes an eagle. Versions of the reverse are inspired by sculpture series called "Vistas of Liberty," honoring the cultural, geographical and historical diversity of the United States.
For the 1997 release, the reverse was designed by Thomas D. Rogers, showcasing a bald eagle in flight with an olive branch, a symbol of peace and a tribute to the original Thirteen Colonies. For 1998, the reverse was the work of architect-sculptor Paul Balan, portraying an eagle in front of a striped shield, with beckoning stars overhead. In 1999, Charles L. Vickers’ design was used for the reverse, which depicts an eagle emerging from a sunburst.
The Platinum Eagle bullion coins from 2000 through 2008 all feature the same reverse design created by John Mercanti. The design shows an eagle and a shield with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on a ribbon as well as “IN GOD WE TRUST”. The eagle’s wings mirror the shapes of the letters “U” and “S”.
The one-tenth ounce gold coins are pre-packaged in an elegant velvet jewelry box, which serves as an attractive addition to the formal US Mint packaging. Each coin is minted with the legal tender face value of $25, although its actual market value is much higher.
The Platinum Eagles from 1997 to 2008 are popular coins for investment and collection. Their precious metal content, historical relevance, and beautiful designs make them a great addition to any portfolio or collection.
