Proudly released from the United States Mint, the 1997-2008 American Platinum Eagle coins were the first and only platinum bullion coins ever issued by the U.S government. The American Platinum Eagles debuted in 1997 following the approval of the The American Eagle Platinum Bullion (also called the "Liberty Coin Act") two years earlier in 1995. This significant milestone marked a significant expansion to the already existing gold and silver American Eagle coin series.
Like their gold and silver counterparts, the Platinum Eagle coins come in four denominations:1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 ounce. The obverse side of all Platinum Eagle coins showcases a portrait of the Statue of Liberty designed by John Mercanti while the reverse side is a continually changing design that shows the changing nature of America and its diversity. The reverse side of the coin has been frequently displaying images of an eagle, eagle and shield, a soaring bald eagle, and an eagle on a new moon.
All Platinum Eagle coins weigh exactly one Troy Ounce and contain 99.95% fine platinum. Each coin has a face value of $100, making them some of the highest face value coins ever produced by the United States Mint.
Having been minted for almost 15 years straight, the American Platinum Eagles are some of the most popular coins ever made. Seen by many as symbols of progress and freedom, these coins are highly sought after by both collectors and investors alike. Each Platinum Eagle coin also carries with it a unique serial number and the coins come in a range of certified grades from Mint State 70 to Proof 70.
Whatever your collecting or investment objectives, the 1997-2008 American Platinum Eagle Coins are a prime example of some of the finest U.S coins available on the market today.
